Project: Collaborative Environments

In the United States, research on magnetic fusion is conducted in over 40 states by approximately 1500 scientists. With only three main experimental facilities in the country, the need to remotely participate and collaborate among research teams is critical to scientific progress.

The National Fusion Collaboratory Project is funded by the USDOE under the Scientific Discovery through Advanced Computing (SciDAC) initiative. This project, lead by the Data Analysis Aplications Group, The project is developing and deploying a national Fusion Energy Sciences Grid (FusionGrid) that is a system for secure sharing of computation, visualization, and data resources over the Internet. The goal of FusionGrid is to allow scientists at remote sites to participate fully in experimental and computational activities as if they were working at a common site thereby creating a virtual organization of the U.S. fusion community.

More information on the National Fusion Collaboratory Project is available from its web site http://www.fusiongrid.org/.
