HOME EXPENDITURES AND FINANCIAL SUPPORT INTERNATIONAL ADVISORY COMMITTEE |
INTRODUCTION The Second IAEA Technical Meeting (IAEA-TM) on Physics and Technology of Inertial Fusion Energy Targets and Chambers will take place in San Diego, California USA from Monday, 17 June 2002 to Wednesday, 19 June 2002. (The first meeting was held in Madrid, Spain, 7-9 June 2000.) The objective of the meeting is to contribute to advancing the understanding of targets and chambers for all proposed inertial fusion energy power plant designs. The Technical Meeting will include invited and contributed papers on all aspects of the following:
1. Target design and physics, including fast ignition
The scope of the meeting will include target and chamber physics and technology for all proposed IFE plant concepts (laser driven, heavy-ion driven, Z-pinches) The format of the meeting will be invited and contributed papers presented in sessions devoted to special topics with subsequent discussions. A single plenary session is envisioned for all papers. A poster session will be added if necessitated by the number of papers submitted. It is expected that all talks will be ~20"-2"5 minutes with 5 minutes for discussion. An overhead projector for transparencies and an electronic projector with a computer capable of reading CD's will be available (Power Point recommended). The official language of the meeting is English (no interpretation will be provided). It is expected that the meeting will start at 0830 on 17 June and end by 1700 on 19 June 2002. Preregistration is requested, please fill in the Response Form (PDF, Microsoft Word). (If you have previously emailed us your intention to attend, there is no need to complete this form a second time.) A special issue of Fusion Science and Technology has been arranged for attendees of this meeting. Instructions can be found on the Special Issue Page. About fifty persons from IAEA Member States or international organizations are expected to attend. Participants should be persons actively involved in the topics of the meeting. Following the standard IAEA procedure, official participants of the meeting must be nominated through their national authorities (Ministry of Foreign Affairs or National Atomic Energy Authority). To participate in the meeting, there are three major steps that must be completed: 1) Abstract Submittal. If you plan to present a paper at the meeting, a one page abstract must be submitted before 1 April 2002. The Abstract may be text only or contain figures and graphics, but must be only one page. The abstract must contain the authors name, affiliation and E-mail address. Acceptable file formats are Microsoft Word (preferred), PDF, HTML, or plain text. The filename should be in the following format: "lastname-firstname.filetype". Please use the
Web
site for uploading to facilitate abstract submittal (instructions are
given at the site). (If necessary, you may also submit an abstract
by email to dan.goodin 2) IAEA Participation Form. Please send a completed Participation Form (PDF, Microsoft Word) with the abstract of your presentation (if any) to your appropriate authority (Ministry of Foreign Affairs, National Atomic Energy Authority) for subsequent transmission to the IAEA. A participant will be accepted only if the Participation Form is transmitted through the appropriate authority. The Participation Form and abstracts must be received at the IAEA by 3 May 2002. Please send an additional copy of the Participation Form and abstract by e-mail or fax directly to the IAEA Scientific Secretary. Participants whose nominations have been received by the IAEA will be notified by 8 May 2002. 3) Approval to Enter the Conference Site. All persons that are not US citizens must also provide specific biographical data to obtain clearance and a badge to enter the General Atomics site. Please complete the Form for Non-US Citizens (Closed). EXPENDITURES AND FINANCIAL SUPPORT The costs for the organization of the meeting are borne by the host organization and the IAEA. No registration fee will be charged to participants. As a general rule, the IAEA does not pay the cost for attendance to the meeting (i.e. travel and living expenses) of participants. However, limited funds are available to help meet the cost of attendance of a few selected specialists mainly from developing countries with low economic resources. Generally, not more than one grant will be awarded to any one country. The grants awarded will be in the form of lump sums usually covering part of the cost of attendance. If governments wish to apply for a grant on behalf of one of their specialists, they should address specific requests to the IAEA Scientific Secretary at the International Atomic Energy Agency to this effect. Governments should ensure that applications for grants: a) are received by the IAEA by 3 May 2002 and b) are accompanied by a duly completed and signed Participation Form (see above) including the abstract of the paper to be presented. Applications that do not comply with the conditions mentioned above cannot be considered. Awards will be announced around 24 May 2002. For advance notice, please address inquiries to the IAEA Scientific Secretary.
San Diego is located in the southwestern corner of California on the border with Mexico. General Atomics lies on the northern edge of the community of La Jolla ("la-hoya"), and is adjacent to the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). La Jolla is about 13 miles north of downtown San Diego. The meeting will be held in Conference Room 07"-2"17 at the General Atomics main site. Advance approval is an absolute necessity for non US citizens to enter the site (see Participation). Coffee and snacks will be provided in the Conference Room. Limited Internet access will be available (Web access and RJ-45 connections for your laptop). The onsite GA Cafeteria will serve lunch. You may wish to see more information on San Diego and a map to General Atomics, Transportation/carpools will be arranged upon request to transport visitors from the designated hotels to the General Atomics site. Designated participants who require a visa to enter the United States of America should submit the necessary application to the nearest diplomatic or consular representative of the USA as soon as possible. If one is required, an official letter of invitation will be sent to participants after completion of the Form for Non-US Citizens (Closed). San Diego International Airport(SAN) (Lindbergh Field) provides the primary airline service for the area, and is 15 miles south of the General Atomics main site. Additional air commuter connections from Los Angeles (LAX) are available into the McClellan-Palomar airport in Carlsbad, California (CLD), about 22 miles north of the General Atomics main site. Private cars are the usual means of transport in southern California. Without a car, transportation from the airports to hotels is provided by taxi (about $45-50 to the designated hotels) or shuttle bus service (inquire at airport). If requested, transportation/carpools from the designated hotels to the conference site and back each day will be arranged. Please notify us if you would like this service. Further information is given in the Accommodation page. If you are driving, here is a map from the airport to the General Atomics site. See the hotel Web sites for addresses and directions. Information on the two designated meeting hotels (including rates and links for reservations) is provided in the Accommodation page, which includes other information about your visit to southern California. There are many other hotels in the area, but transportation/carpools to the conference will be arranged to/from the designated hotels. Please note that the deadline for designated hotel reservations is May 15, 2002. An informal Reception will be held on Monday evening (17 June) at General Atomics. On Tuesday evening, we will embark on a private yacht for a tour of San Diego Bay, followed by an informal dinner on board. There will be no charge for these events for participants and accompanying persons. Transportation to the San Diego Embarcadero will be arranged for those needing it. INTERNATIONAL ADVISORY COMMITTEE
